The Houston Texans held their seventh day of training camp on Wednesday.
Here are 11 observations from the padded practice.
The defensive excellence that is possible was on display in this practice. Most of the day, it felt like the defense was smothering the offense. Rushes went nowhere. Coverage was tight. Quarterbacks had to throw the ball away or take off. It wasn’t just one player. The defense received contributions up and down the depth chart. It was a long day for the offense, which has to relish the off day tomorrow. If this were MMA, the defense won the day by submission.
Jadeveon Clowney has plenty left in the tank. Clowney joked after his first day that a few reps felt like double in the heat. Well, he was the source of heat on quarterbacks. He absolutely mashed tackle Braden Smith for a sack. Remember, it was hot, so that counts as two sacks! The offense had to use Woody Marks and Wyatt Teller on one play to try to slow Clowney down. It worked, but barely. He’s going to be a force to be reckoned with as a depth player. It’s quite scary to think Clowney could appear in a sub package with the star edge duo and truly create havoc.
