11 Observations from Rookie Minicamp
A small rookie class got to work as NFL players for the first time
The Texans held their rookie minicamp on Friday. All of the draftees were in attendance as were six undrafted free agents the team added after the draft. It was a light workout for the rookies. There were no intense football moments.
Here are 11 observations from the rookie minicamp workout.
DeMeco Ryans said after the practice the emphasis is on teaching the rookies at this minicamp. He said the coaching staff gets excited to see the players execute and watch the players recall what little they picked up in the draft process. They want the players to get familiar with the terminology ahead of mingling with the veterans.
There were only about 20 rookies total out on the field with the draft picks, undrafted players, and the players invited for a tryout. This allowed plenty of instructional time for the coaches. Cade Stover for instance is the lone tight end. There are only two offensive and defensive linemen. Kamari Lassiter at one point had three different coaches with him working on a drill. As Ryans said after the workout there weren’t a lot of long lines before players got to reps or instruction from the coaching.
