Below I have 24 questions about the 2024 Houston Texans. Let this serve as a preview for the season and also a checklist for 2024. Refer back to it and check up on the status of these questions through camp and into the regular season.
Let’s dive in.
24. Who will be Joe Mixon’s backup?
Joe Mixon is the clear, unquestioned, undisputed top back on the Texans. He is a workhorse back that is a rarity in the league these days. He has previously finished fifth and third in carries. Mixon is the guy. But he can’t be the only ball carrier. He needs a player to spell him and change the pace.
Dameon Pierce has to bounce back from the terrible 2023 season. He couldn’t pick up the system and wasn’t as physical as in 2022 when he annihilated defenders. If Pierce figures it out, he is the backup. DeMeco Ryans has mentioned they would like Pierce to be the two in the one-two punch with Mixon. For Pierce it might just simply be does the offense click for him and if it does he is the backup.
The other options have more questions than Mixon. Rookies Jawhar Jordan and British Brooks are very different and have much to learn. Jordan has experience in a zone scheme and Brooks is a larger back. Dare Ogunbowale is on the team but likely as a specialty back and special teams player.
23. What is the expectation for Stefon Diggs?
This is a multi-layered question that goes both ways. What do the Texans want from Diggs and what does Diggs want from the Texans?
