The Houston Texans shouldn’t sign C.J. Stroud to an extension. Stroud shouldn’t want a contract extension.
If both sides agree with the above statements, the next time Stroud’s contract comes up will be in 2027.
“Similar to what I said in Training Camp,” General Manager Nick Caserio said Tuesday, “we’ve had productive discussions. I would say the reality is, we will either get it figured out before the season starts or if we don’t, it’s something we will address in the offseason.”
It isn’t a rule to end contract negotiations because football is being played, but the Texans are taking that approach with Stroud. Caserio hinted that approach is sometimes influenced by players as well.
“We’ve done some deals during the season,” he said. “I would say, once players get into the season, sometimes they want to focus on football and don’t want to worry about dealing with the contract.”
It makes little sense for either side to lock in an extension now.
