C.J. Stroud Not Throwing in OTAs is a Big Deal...Until it Isn't

C.J. Stroud has not thrown in either of the open OTA practices the Texans have had this offseason. According to KPRC, it is a minor shoulder muscle issue that has kept Stroud from practicing. He’s been relegated to light warmups and handoffs to running backs.

The Houston Texans have not directly addressed Stroud’s absence from throwing drills.

“For all the guys you see here,” DeMeco Ryans said last week when asked directly about Stroud not throwing, “there will be guys on different schedules, different routine, so you’ll see some guys out and some guys won’t be out.”

Ryans wasn’t at the microphone after Friday’s practice. New offensive coordinator Nick Caley said there wasn’t any worry about Stroud’s light workload of handoffs and warmups.

“No concerns whatsoever,” Caley said. He echoed the head coach's sentiments on different schedules for different players.

This isn’t part of a plan. No team would schedule for its franchise quarterback to avoid throwing. A team, especially, wouldn’t have him take days off when there are wide receivers to sync up with, a new offensive line to gel with, and a different offense to learn.

Stroud is hurt.
