Nick Caley is the Pick for the Texans. What Now for the New OC?
Why Nick Caley and what is his charge in 2025?
The Houston Texans announced Monday the hiring of Nick Caley as their offensive coordinator. Caley previously was the Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach and pass game coordinator. He replaced the fired Bobby Slowik.
Caley’s selection should come as no surprise. He was one of the top candidates in this hiring cycle. For me, he was the top candidate.
Caley interviewed two years ago for the job that ultimately went to Slowik. At that point, the only notable element of Caley’s resume was that he had been a long-time tight ends coach for the New England Patriots. He’d had some other stops that provided some variety to his history. He coached under Air Raid offenses, Tom Herman’s Iowa State offense, and Bret Bielema’s power run in Arkansas.
I like tight end coaches. They have to coach so many different facets of the game. They must know the rushing game and run blocking. They have to know how the passing game works and the pass blocking. They have to teach receiving as well. It’s a tough position with more challenges than most positions.
The two years of seasoning under Sean McVay in Los Angeles added to his potential as an offensive coordinator.
