To Kick or Not to Kick

Should the Texans have gone for it on fourth down instead of letting Matt Ammendola kick the field goal?

Well, it’s complicated.

Let’s look at Ammendola’s portion of the situation first. He’s never made a kick over 50 yards. He had already missed a field goal in this game. The team was initially rushing him out onto the field before the Jaguars called a timeout. He ultimately just missed the 58-yard attempt.

It’s not unheard of to hit a field goal from that distance, later on Sunday Jake Elliott hit a 59-yard kick in rainy conditions, but it’s a low probability for an unproven kicker. Yes, kickers are better than ever from distance, but that’s good and proven kickers.
