Solid Start for Texans in Preseason Opener | Preseason Game One Recap
A stellar drive for Davis Mills got things kicked off
The Houston Texans played their first preseason game of the 2025 season Saturday.
Here are 11 observations from the game.
Davis Mills was excellent on his opening drive. He showcased how decisive the quarterback can be in this offense. It seemed like he wasn’t second-guessing anything; he was ready to let it fly. The play-action rollout had worked well in practice, and it worked to perfection in this one. Mills executed it perfectly while Braxton Berrios did his part for the score.
Dare Ogunbowale was excellent on the opening drive. He was a physical runner and amassed 29 of the 74 yards on the drive. Ogunbowale has earned trust with the organization. He ran the ball well in camp before the preseason game, and that success continued. Ogunbowale has plenty of special teams uses. He won’t be easy to pry off this roster.
The offensive line was firing off the ball early. They opened up some big holes for Ogunbowale. They didn’t get tested a ton in protection since Mills was getting rid of the ball quickly. I liked what Jake Andrews and Juice Scruggs did in the run game. Scruggs had seemingly fallen down the depth chart, but in the past week, it feels like he is back in the mix for a roster spot. I wouldn’t count him out just yet. The line was not effective enough for the backup quarterbacks.
