Texans Eschew DK Metcalf But Still Need Wide Receivers as Free Agency Begins
Expect overpays in free agency if you want good talent
The Pittsburgh Steelers sent a selection in the second round of this year’s draft to the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver DK Metcalf. Pittsburgh also extended Metcalf handing him a contract extension worth $33 million annually for four seasons.
The Houston Texans rightfully passed on Metcalf at those prices. He now becomes the third-highest-paid player at the position by average annual value and Pittsburgh also had to send a draft pick.
Rumors swirled Metcalf wanted warmer weather and a stable quarterback situation but ultimately, like the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase used to say, everybody’s got a price. Metcalf went to another 10-7 team with cold weather and a fully-unknown quarterback situation.
The Texans have plenty of needs, a wide receiver or two is on the list, but pursuing Metcalf at that cost would have been foolish. He’s not better than Nico Collins, and even if you think he is he isn’t almost $9 million a year better. Houston isn’t a wide receiver away from going where they want, so Metcalf didn’t fit.
