Texans Free Agent Options Vary in Need and Talent
Here are some names to keep an eye on as free agency approaches
The Houston Texans won’t be as generous with their spending as they did last year, but they still have holes free agency can fill.
If the Texans identify a player in free agency who can change the outlook of their upcoming season, they shouldn’t let money get in the way. The team can create cap space by restructuring and converting existing contracts.
Certain positions dictate less interesting and impressive names because the Texans have depth or talent there already. In other positions, there are worthwhile investments to be made.
There are no quarterbacks on this list since the Texans extended Davis Mills. Kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn and punter Tommy Townsend are under contract so no special team players will be on this list.
Here are three targets per position the Texans should consider.
Running Back
Raheem Mostert
J.K. Dobbins
Samaje Perine
These aren’t the biggest or best names available but the Texans aren’t looking for a lead back. The right player could slide into the depth chart behind Joe Mixon and Houston could use a draft pick to find a running back for third downs. While I would prefer a rookie as the second running back, these names are solid enough behind Mixon. Perine is intriguing because Mixon knows him and he handled some of the duties on third down for the Chiefs last year.
Wide Receiver
Chris Godwin
Demarcus Robinson
Nick Westbrook-Ikhine
