Texans Stay Busy With Senior Bowl and Another Coordinator Interview
Thad Lewis is the latest and what stood out in Mobile, Alabama
The Houston Texans completed an interview with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis for their vacant offensive coordinator position. The NFL Network was the first to report it.
Lewis is the third candidate to get an interview joining Syracuse's offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon and quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson.
The 37-year-old Lewis has been coaching for seven seasons after a journeyman career in the NFL. His current position, quarterbacks coach, is the most notable coaching position he has held previously being an assistant wide receivers coach and an offensive analyst in college.
Lewis played quarterback for Chip Kelly in San Francisco. Kelly, the current Ohio State offensive coordinator, is atop many wishlists. Kelly also gave Lewis his start in coaching when Kelly was at UCLA. When Lewis quarterbacked a winless Duke football team as a freshman, former Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was his offensive coordinator that season.
Standing alone Lewis isn’t the most exciting candidate. Among the names mentioned, and even names interviewed, he’s the least impressive option. If Lewis wasn’t retained in Tampa Bay, and Kelly got the nod, this interview would make a lot more sense.
