The Houston Texans Still Believe in Their Offense | Happy Thanksgiving
A Thanksgiving break and the Jacksonville Jaguars might be what they need
The Houston Texans are close.
Close shouldn’t be a talking point in week 13 of the season, but the Texans feel they are close to getting the offense on track.
Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik praised the results this season on offense. When questioned why the team had taken a step back in consistency compared to last year he balked at the notion.
“I am pretty positive our offense is better right now,” he said. “I think outside of having abnormal situations. Everyone talks about the bad, but we do some incredible situational things for really half of the three quarters of the game. We are like fourth in points in the first half and I don’t even think we are good in the red zone in the first half so there is a whole lot out there still.”
There are some things better for the Texans this season. Joe Mixon had awakened the rushing attack. They’re excellent in the first half and scoring slightly more points per game than last year.
That might be it when it comes to improving. Houston has dropped off in passing offense, third down percentage, red zone touchdown percentage, and second-half scoring.
Their pass protection has cratered compared to last year as well. A hodge-podge offensive line for most of the season was average last year while this year’s version has been flat-out bad.
Houston’s offense has one of the largest gaps in football between success in the first half and success in the second half. Slowik mentioned they are fourth in first-half scoring. They’re 26th in second-half scoring.
