Brian Johnson becomes the seventh candidate to get an opportunity to be the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. KPRC reported Thursday that Johnson will be interviewed on Friday.
Adam Schefter reported a sixth interview, with Grant Udinski, but more on him later.
Johnson’s current title for the Washington Commanders is assistant head coach/offensive pass game coordinator. He previously was the offensive coordinator in Philidelphia, for one season, and coached quarterbacks for the Eagles.
Johnson's tenure as offensive coordinator lasted only one season because the offense failed to meet expectations compared to the previous year. His simplistic strategy and heavy reliance on screenplays were the primary criticisms of his offensive approach. Sound familiar Texans fans?
Johnson is an interesting interview for Houston. It allows him to explain 2023’s disappointment and demonstrate how much he could go about fixing the issues he was responsible for from that year. Like some other interviewees, Johnson is a potential candidate later if he doesn’t get the job this year and the success leads to the eventual coordinator leaving for a head coach position.
I like his candidacy more than quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, senior offensive assistant Bill Lazor, and Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis. I could be sold on him being a better candidate than Syracuse offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon. I still prefer Rams tight ends coach/pass game coordinator Nick Caley.
Now for Udinski. He is the assistant offensive coordinator/assistant quarterbacks
