The Houston Texans must bench Kenyon Green. Playing the struggling left guard isn’t in the best interest of the offensive line or franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Stroud can’t continue his Houdini act to compensate for the failures of Green and the offensive line. According to Next Gen Stats, the Texans allowed more pressure against the Indianapolis Colts than the week before against the Green Bay Packers.
The amount of quarterback pressures increased from 13 to 23. The pressure percentage jumped from 44.8% to 57.5%. The sacks decreased but the quarterback hits rose from seven to nine.
Green’s performance was the offensive line’s nadir. The third-year guard was benched in favor of Jarrett Patterson. The benching lasted one series, which the Texans scored on before a concussion knocked Patterson out of the game.
Despite being benched, with another backup option in Kendrick Green active, Kenyon Green was reinserted at left guard.
Ryans commended Patterson’s performance in his limited time before explaining why it was Kenyon Green instead of Kenrick Green.
“Unfortunately, [Patterson] was out and Kenyon was back in,” he said. “There was no overthinking it, Kenyon got a lot of reps throughout the week and he was the guy to go in and he had a lot of good reps as well. A lot of people want to focus on the bad, everybody has bad reps here and there and we can all focus on that or we can look at the positive that he had some really good plays as well.”
Explaining Kenyon Green over Kendrick Green because of practice reps is a worthwhile reason for choosing to revert to the starting lineup.
While Ryans stood up for his troubled guard there wasn’t much good to examine.
