What's the Perfect Position to Pick for the Texans With Their 2024 Selections?
This essentially serves as position priority for the team heading into the draft
The Houston Texans have nine selections in the 2024 NFL Draft. I don’t believe Nick Caserio will use all of those picks, nor will they stay in their current position should he choose to make nine selections.
The Texans have these picks currently
(2) 42
(2) 59
(3) 86
(4) 123
(4) 127
(6) 188
(6) 189
(7) 238
(7) 247
What would be the perfect positional pick for the top selections the Texans make?
42nd Overall - Defensive Tackle
Potential Players: Illinois DT Johnny Newton, Florida State DT Braden Fiske, Texas DT T’Vondre Sweat
Why DT: The Texans have added plenty of names to the defensive tackle room, but I couldn’t put my finger on a sure set of starters in the group. Nor could I clearly see a pecking order develop. There are options but it is murky trying to figure out the rotation. So, let’s add another option.
A draft pick of a defensive tackle at 42 solidifies one spot of the four or five the team will keep. I would also believe Foley Fatukasi’s $5 million means he is on the team as well. So it helps clarify the availability of a roster spot for the veterans and throws the young player into the fire. If there isn’t a starter, it could be you with enough work in training camp.
Newton would be a dream slip. He has spent time as a player projected to be in the first round so to see him slide to 42 would be fantastic. Fiske is a violent player and his athleticism at the combine and performance at the Senior Bowl practices have led to extra looks at his successful season for the Seminoles. Sweat’s potential to go here is lower because of his fit in the defense and the arrest for suspicion of DWI this past weekend but you can’t count out his unique nature.
59th Overall - Wide Receiver
Potential players: Oregon WR Troy Franklin, Michigan WR Roman Wilson, Florida WR Ricky Pearsall, South Carolina WR Xavier Legette, Florida State WR Keon Coleman, Washington WR Ja’Lynn Polk, Alabama WR Jermaine Burton
Why WR: This might seem counterproductive based on the team’s addition of Stefon Diggs last week, but it makes a lot of sense. Diggs, Nico Collins, and Noah Brown are all set to be free agents at the end of the 2024 season. I believe the Texans want to extend Nico Collins, but until he is extended, you need to plan like there is a possibility he will leave.
